Glossy Woodtone Lateral File Cabinet = French Country Chest of Drawers

 I picked this up yesterday……..

off of Craig's List.

 It's a lateral file cabinet.

I've been looking for one to use in my office.

This is one heavy bugger!

The sides had damage, but I don't care…

It's not staying this way for long!

I had the assembly line going today.

 First I painted the piece in a base coat

 of Annie Sloan Country Grey,

including the pulls.

 Next, I dry brushed the front and the trim with Old White.

The sides and top got a coat of French Linen.

 After distressing all the edges with a mouse sander,

I waxed first with clear, and then with dark.

 I added lots of dark to the edges and the pulls.

 Seriously, doesn't this look like something from an old chateau??

The pulls look all crusty like they are timeworn….

a big improvement over that glossy brass.

 Nothing perfect here!!!

That's what makes this piece truly special!

I love using several different colors like this, 

and layering them,

because it creates so much depth and texture.

Although I bought this for ME,

I do believe I've already sold it.

Oh well.

They come, they go..

A Faux Stainless Steel Topped Coffee Table!

I found this little particle board coffee table

in the alley the other day…

It had some damage to the top…

not a lot you can do to particle board that's gotten wet.

But you know me,

I hate to give up on anything!!!

 

So….I gathered my tools….

…and my secret weapon:

This vinyl I purchased at Ufab 

that looks like brushed stainless!

 I cut around the tabletop, leaving some overhang….

then I spray adhesived the top and 

placed the fabric on top.

Next, I carefully flipped the table upside down,

and stapled the turned edges on the underside, 

then trimmed the excess.

 I flipped it back over,

 and it looks like this.

Next, using these little wire nails,

I hammered in all along the four sides...

If I weren't low on them, 

I'd try to simulate riveting…

like this….

 …but for now, 

this will do….

 One little industrial coffee table……

the cost of this was $17.99 for a yard of vinyl, 

and a couple bucks for the nails.

I used a black Sharpie paint pen to touch up the legs,

and it looks like a brand new piece!

And I saved yet another piece of furniture from a landfill.

Yay me!

A Rescued Old Toy Chest = New Digs for Babar!

This old toy chest has spent many many years in a storage shed.

 My friend, Teresa, gave it to me this week…..

All the wood is covered in this paper that is flaking off...

 Here's the inside………

same situation: flaking disintegrated paper.

The handles are in great shape.

 I'm going to begin this process by scraping off the paper.

 After the scraping, I sanded……….

here you can see the one section I've yet to tackle…

and the rest where the wood is revealed.

 Next, I used walnut gel stain over the slats and the metal edging.

 And for the rest of the wood,

I gave it a good rubbing with lemon oil.

 Back

 But the insides are still yukky….

 So I found an old book that was coming apart, and removed the pages…

and with some spray adhesive….

 I begin to randomly cover the insides with the pages...

 After all the paper was in place, 

I used Modge Podge to seal it.

 Here it is the next morning.

Now it's all nice and clean…

inside and out.

Looks like Babar is enjoying his new digs!

 An alley find…….

 Great lines, 

very petite….

 This L O N G process begins with disassembly...

 All the old upholstery was removed.

You can learn a lot by deconstructing something...

Underneath the upholstery, is another layer,

which I'm leaving….

I begin by painting the legs 

in Annie Sloan French Linen.

 

Next step: the seat….

I'm adding some batting for extra fluff...

 …along the inside back and arms.

 Next, deciding on fabrics………

so many choices………...

 One given: 

This burlap coffee sack for the back…

 After looking at a zillion pieces of fabric,

I opt for my trusty striped ticking...

 I decided to keep the tufting casual.

I used mismatched oversized buttons

instead of upholstered ones.

 It's coming together……

Wilma loves the feel of new upholstery

on her claws. ;)

Other side, back.

 And my favorite as always,

the back.

Next step, edging everything in trim.

It's done! 

I used another stripe for the seat cushion,

with oversized piping.

 

The flip side of the cushion is

a natural linen. 

wo looks in one!

 I added a little throw pillow that I made

with fabric from a linen skirt.

 And this baby….

 …is just about...

done!!!!!!
