The Color Pink

I'm usually not a pink kind of gal……..

Maybe it's the time of year…… 

'cause pink is definitely in the air……..

and i've gone outside my norm

to do a few pink makeovers lately.

 I purchased this little deco vanity seat from a junk guy...

 First step: White chalk paint.

 Next, I whipped up a custom light pink by mixing 

ASCP in Scandinavian Pink and Pure White….

and applied over the white.

 Then I added just a bit of darker pink here and there.

 Less is more….

 Then I decided on my fabric and recovered the seat...

 After waxing the entire piece in clear wax, 

I used dark wax in all the details,

edges and crevices.

 And here is the finished piece.

I love the juxtaposition of the trendy ikat fabric with the

"antiqueness" of the chair. 

(Is that even a word?)

 I picked up this little narrow plate rack/shelving unit at a Goodwill last week.

Perfect condition if you like dark wood…I don't.

 Since, I'm going to paint the interior and back as well, 

it's easier just to remove the back.

  painted the back in white..

 And then, continuing my "pink period," 

I starting dry brushing the light pink

over the inside and outside of the shelving unit.

 Then I dry brushed a darker coral color.

Here's a little preview...

A pink shelf?  Really…

Hmmm…

I need to put on my thinking cap...

 Aha……….Liking this SO much better.

I added a layer of Chateau Gray over the pinks.

This is a medium olive color.

 I didn't want total coverage - 

i wanted the coral and the pinks to show through.

A little distress sanding and waxing...

Instant antique!

 Since I'm on a pink roll,

I decided to do this sweet little table as well.

I painted it in two coats of light pink...

And then lightly "hit" some of 

the details and edges with white.

and then…….

THE RAINS CAME…………

but at least you get the gist of it…

Leftover slats and a trashed nightstand = Functional Art

Remember this old louvered door I blogged about?

 I removed the slats and put in chicken wire, 

and then painted in a distressed technique.

 I saved all the slats and today, I figured a way to use them.

I picked up this little nightstand in the alley the other day, 

so here goes...

 I decided to use the slats to make a little picket fence back…

I started by simply nailing slats to the back on either end.

Then I staggered the height as I continued

to add the slats.

 Here's the back. 

I used a couple slats horizontally to stabilize the vertical slats.

 Next, I used my jigsaw to cut a scrap of thick plywood into a triangular shape and

positioned it on the back top of the table, 

then nailed through the back slats into this piece.

(I'm making this up as I go folks…

I have no idea what I'm doing…)

 Then I decided a hook of some sort might be nice, 

and I remembered this cast iron hook with two birds i bought awhile back.

 It fits perfectly above the tip of the triangle.

I screwed it in.

 Next, I changed out the porcelain knob for a little bird knob.

 And here's where we are.

And now, let the painting begin.

 After sanding,

I started by painting some splotches of 

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Louis Blue.

 Next, I added a deep teal…

Just a splotch here and there…

I want plenty of white to remain.

 Then I added two more turquoise colors…

I painted the drawer front in white, 

and the drawer insides with Louis Blue.

 The last paint step is dry brushing some brown paint 

on the nightstand to integrate the brown that shows through in the slats.

 After the paint dried, I sanded a bit, 

and started brushing on a little stain

in a weathered wood finish...

Adding, and then wiping off.

I think it's rather sweet.  

Is it art or is it furniture?

It's FUNCTIONAL art.

Trashed Child's Table & Chair Set Gets a Colorful New Life!!!!

so……….

remember this trash find I showed you yesterday?

A children's table and chair set..

Flintstone like legs.

Very sturdy because the leg bases are chunky.

 They were so filthy…..

Even after a good scrubbing they were pretty yukky:

 Here's what I did to reinvent this set:

 Spray paint baby!

Yep, you can spray plastic with spray paint.

So I did...

 Each chair got a poppy new color.

 Next, I traced out words on tracing paper.

(After doing this, flip over, and use graphite to draw the outlines of the letters again…

on the reverse side of the tracing paper.)

Then position the word  where you'd like it to appear on the chair.

 Then use a hard tipped pen or pencil to trace the letters.

When you remove the paper, you'll have an outline.

 And then, just fill in with paint.  

I used Sharpie paint pens.

 Cute, huh?

Here is the finished set:

Meet "draw, play, laugh and read."

 And finally, the table…."dream."
